Abu Musa Jabir ibn Hayyan (, , often given the

Sufi; fl. c. 721c. 815), also known as
Geber, was a prominent
polymath: a
chemist and alchemist,
astronomer and
astrologer,
engineer, geographer,
philosopher,
physicist, and
pharmacist and physician. Born and educated in
Tus, he later traveled to
Kufa and his father came from
Syria (
bilad al-Sham). He is sometimes referred to as the father of early chemistry.
