The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour
From Jim Shipley: I was a regular on the Horn and Hardart Children's Hour broadcast from station WCAU in Philadelphia from 1946 - 1948. I was invited back to be on their first television broadcast in the summer of 1948. After the show I met the chief announcer at the station, Ed McMahon. One change: By 1948 Stan Lee Broza was the General Manager of WCAU. His wife, Esther Broza was in charge of producing the show when I was there. Their son was known as Elliot Lawrence, a well regarded big band orchestra leader who later became music director for the Tony Awards. At that time the station was located at fifteenth and Chestnut Streets. I will never forget that blue building with the art-deco statues out front. The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour (later known as The Children's Hour) was a variety show with a cast of children, including some who later became well-known adult performers. It had a long run for more than three decades. The program was sponsored by Horn & Hardart, which owned restaurants, bakeshops and automats in New York City and Philadelphia.
