Line 16 is a southern line of the
Shanghai Metro network. It was originally designated as Line 21 and was planned as the south part of
Line 11. The line runs entirely in
Pudong New Area, starting from
Longyang Road, via Huinan Town, Shanghai Wild Animal Park, the proposed Pudong Railway Station, ending at
Dishui Lake Station in
Nanhui New City. The line is 59 km long and has 13 stations of which three are underground and the rest elevated. Construction begun in early 2009, and the line opened on 29 December 2013. The 2nd phase was completed at the end of 2014, providing interchanges to Lines
2,
7,
11,
13 and
18. It is the only line in the Shanghai Metro planned to feature different stopping services, with an express services stopping only at Longyang Road, Luoshan, Xinchang, Huinan, and Dishui Lake Stations. After January 30, 2014, due to insufficient rolling stock and overcrowding of the line, all express services where suspended. These measures allowed local train headways to shorten from every 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Once sufficient rolling stock has been acquired then express services will resume. In addition, to further increase capacity, the existing 3 car train sets will be expanded to full 6 car sets by the end of 2015. The line is colored
aqua on system maps.
