Samatha (
Pāli), (
Sanskrit: शमथ,
śamatha is the Buddhist practice (
bhavana) of the calming of the mind (
citta) and its 'formations' (
sankhara). This is done by practicing single-pointed meditation most commonly through
mindfulness of breathing.
Samatha is common to all Buddhist traditions.
