Islam in Ethiopia is the second-most widely practised religion after
Christianity. According to the latest 2007 national census, there are over 25 million (or 34%)
Muslim adherents. The faith arrived in
Ethiopia at an early date, shortly after the
hijira.
Islam is the religion of the overwhelming majority of the
Somali,
Afar,
Argobba,
Harari,
Berta,
Alaba, and
Silt'e and also has many adherents among the
Gurage and the
Oromo, the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia.
