Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor
, and a freedman of
Caesar Augustus
. He was elected superintendent of the Palatine library by Augustus according to
Suetonius'
De Grammaticis
, 20. It is not clear whether Hyginus was a native of the
Iberian Peninsula
or of
Alexandria
.
