. It is a tradition that originated in

and to some extent in
Afghanistan

Bangladesh

Sri Lanka
,
Nepal
and
Pakistan
. Today, it is one of the two subgenres of
Indian classical music
, the other being
Carnatic music
, the classical tradition of
South India
.
