He was husband to
Pauline Bonaparte
, sister to Napoleon. He was sent to
Saint-Domingue
(present-day
Republic of Haiti
) where an expeditionary force under his command attempted to reassert control over a slave rebellion, eventually capturing and deporting
Toussaint L'Ouverture
