Clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats (abbreviated as
CRISPR, pronounced
crisper) are segments of
prokaryotic DNA containing short repetitions of base sequences. Each repetition is followed by short segments of "
spacer DNA" from previous exposures to a bacterial
virus or
plasmid.
